How To Play The Electric Guitar for Beginners
Many aspiring musicians want to learn how to play the electric guitar. If you're one of them, you will need some instruction. There are various ways to learn to play an instrument, so you can choose the method that is most comfortable for you. For example, there are instructors who can teach you in a class setting as well as instructional videos, DVDs, books and online courses that allow you to learn on your own. Before choosing your preferred instructional method, think about whether you learn most effectively under the tutelage of an instructor or by yourself. In this article, you'll learn more about the basics of playing guitar so that when you do begin learning, you'll have a head start.
Guitars are played by picking or strumming the strings using either the fingers or a tool called a pick. By using the fingers to hold down different strings in different places, you can create a variety of sounds. The majority of guitars are six-stringed and are tuned on the scale of E, A, D, G, B and E. An electric guitar is plugged into a device called an amplifier which projects the sound and helps create a variety of audio effects. Another piece of equipment you may need is called an effects box, which helps make all sorts of fun sounds like distortion and reverb. And of course, you'll need a guitar.
Most electric guitars are either solidbody, semi-hollowbody or chambered. The best type of guitar for the beginner is probably the solidbody. If you are unsure of what kind of guitar you want, try various models out at the music store before deciding. You want something that feels comfortable and sounds good. You will also need a strap so that you can comfortably wear and hold your guitar, as well as a case to transport and protect your guitar when not in use.
Learning how to play the electric guitar is a rewarding pursuit for many musicians. You will need to learn how to read guitar tablature and sheet music. Once you feel confident reading music, you might also want to try playing by ear. There are a variety of talented and successful musicians who prefer playing by ear as opposed to reading music. Like any skill, playing guitar takes patience and practice to master but is well worth the effort!
