What to Expect from Your Electric Guitar Lesson
One of the most popular instruments these days is the electric guitar. For decades, musicians have favored the electric guitar over the acoustic for a variety of reasons. Electric guitars offer enhanced sound and even great audio effects that you just can't get with an acoustic. You can play a variety of different types of music with an electric guitar, including jazz, blues and of course, rock and roll. One of the best ways to learn to play is by taking lessons. In this article you'll learn what to expect and how to get the most out of your electric guitar lesson.
First, find a teacher you feel comfortable with. Different teachers have different teaching styles. Some are going to focus on a particular type of music, so be sure to ask before signing up. After all, if you want to play rock music you may not want a teacher who specializes in blues, jazz or country western guitar. Being able to interact well with your instructor is important for a good learning experience. If you are unsure where to find a good teacher, check with a music shop in your area as that is often where some teachers will leave flyers or business cards.
If you've got dreams of playing a song on your first day, dream on. The first few classes are probably going to focus on the basics of guitar. This includes things like how to hold a guitar, how to carry a guitar, what the different strings are called, what frets are and how to use them, and of course, how to read and play chords. Chords are probably the single most important aspect of learning the guitar because they make up most every piece of music. After teaching you a few basic chords, your teacher will ask you to master those before you learn new ones.
Unlike your first electric guitar lesson, your later lessons will actually have you playing songs and perhaps even composing your own. How long you will need to take lessons will depend on how fast you learn and how advanced you want your skills to be. Your teacher, if he or she is honest and ethical, will probably tell you when they feel you have outgrown their instruction. There are many benefits to taking lessons that you can enjoy. One day, you might even use your guitar skills to teach your own students -- that is, if you're not on a stage somewhere!
