Electric Guitars: A Buying Guide
Electric guitars represent the most widely used type of stringed instrument in the music industry today. All different types of musicians prefer these guitars over the acoustic version for a variety of reasons. Rock and roll, country, blues, jazz -- these are all genres of music where you'll find the electric variety of guitar being used. If you're a beginning musician or shopping for one, it is important to know more about this type of guitar and how to choose the best one for your budget. Let's first take a look at the four different styles that you may come across when shopping. They are solidbody, hollowbody, semi-hollowbody and chambered.
Solidbody is the most commonly seen guitar type and means exactly what it sounds like, that the body is solid. These guitars can be found in a variety of designs from conservative to wild. Then there's the hollowbody. Many jazz musicians prefer the hollowbody because of their deep, rich sound. One of the drawbacks of the hollowbody is its tendency towards feedback at certain volumes. The semi-hollowbody is like a cross between the solidbody and hollowbody. It combines the best of both worlds into a guitar that has minimal feedback and satisfying sound. Chambered guitars are somewhat similar because they contain sealed off chambers inside of the guitar.
There are also different size guitars available, measured by scale length. For example, Fender guitars are commonly 25.5 in scale while Gibson guitars are commonly 24.75 in scale. This is the more common scale and the one most beginners should choose because it is a bit easier to learn to play. If you're not sure which type is best for you, head to the nearest music store and try some different guitars out. You definitely want to do this because guitars are expensive and you want to make sure you are comfortable with the one you purchase.
On the subject of expense, electric guitars can range in price to around $100 to thousands of dollars. For a beginner, a cheap guitar may be the best choice at first. This will allow you, or the person you're shopping for, to learn the basics and figure out whether they actually enjoy playing guitar before making a big investment. There are many music supply stores around the globe where you can shop for instruments. If you know what you want, shopping online is also an option and may be a good way to find a bargain.
